Unit 3 Project
Speak Up
Statement of Goals and Choices For Unit 3 Project
In my piece, I have created an environment that could one day be created about all issues that children could face that may impact their lives. In this piece, it was bullying. Some children do not have the guidance or the same positive influences in their life. Sometimes children are exposed to terrible things that being little makes it to where they have no control over the situation. This is realistically the first book of a series. Others would be, for example, speaking up about sexual abuse or sexual harassment. These issues impact children in a harsh way that might make it different when they are older to cope and deal with issues.
I have had to personally deal with types of abuse in my life. Later, after dealing with therapy, I was finally able to piece together why those people had hurt me. Because they had been hurt themselves by family, they then reciprocate that behavior onto others. It because a cycle that never seems to end.
This piece is to help show and break that cycle of abuse. I wanted to create a story that would show children that if they trust someone, they can tell someone what is going on. With the information that I was given about the life of the people who did abuse me, they were harmed and didn’t have anyone to go to. I wanted to write something that would show a child that they could go to someone they trust and tell them what was going on. To hopefully take them out of the situation and get them the help that they need.
I tried to create images that were welcoming to children to want to read it with the artistic ability that I had. I tried to select words and phrases that they would be able to understand. The main goal is to lower the amount of people staying in abusive situations when they are a child and being able to identify bad situations based off books. That way they might know that its abuse before it has gone too far.
The rhetorical idea for the story for parents is to expand upon that this is a way to help teach their kids and example issues that they might feel uncomfortable exampling without assistance. It also brings to light that they need to make sure that they built a relationship of trust with their kids to have them be understood and heard. Also, for the children to feel comfortable coming to them with information. The smiles on the parents in the story also show a positive influence that they need to have and builds a standard for happy and relatable parents that they can look up to. The children are modeled to try to look innocent to give everyone the idea that they are just learning new things. This also ties in the style of drawing and writing for the piece.
